Summer Hair

summer hair 1

Summer is fast approaching; which brings peace of mind for us Brits. Warm breezes, long days and the hope of being able to step foot outdoors without the need of an umbrella and wooly coat are what we crave when summer is around the corner. However, despite my love for the sun, there’s nothing worse than the wrath of humidity on a head of curly hair like mine.

UV rays from the sun can break down the amino acids in your hair, therefore losing its elasticity, strength and shine. Spending a small fortune on a new summer do can prove to be pointless if maintenance is not up held. Colours fade, highlights turn brassy, hair becomes parched and harsh chemicals from activities such as swimming can cause damage and destruction. Preparation is key during the summer if you want to keep your hair in a healthy and manageable state. Choosing products which protect, hydrate and strengthen will ensure that your hair looks L’Oréal worthy.

Kérastase Styling Spray À Porter £15.75 (currently on offer)

summer hair 2

Designer hair is hardly achievable without the use of these iconic products. The Kérastase Couture range, as headlined by stylist Luigi Murenu, encourages the hair’s natural texture. Containing micropolymers (tiny molecules), each hair strand is individually catered to leaving your style soft, flexible and bouncy. Xylose is also included which protects the hair from heat damage along with ingredients such as vitamin E and UV filters.

Kérastase Styling Spray À Porter is a sea salt spray with a difference. Forget crunchy, unmanageable, and unruly beach hair. This elegant looking bottle promises to deliver you Giselle-esque touselled waves with no effort at all. Spritz onto damp or dry hair and scrunch with fingers. Blow dry or let nature take its course, this spray triples as a heat protectant and hairspray.

The smell is distinctly floral, with notes of patchouli wafting through. I’m not adversed to ‘smelly’ hair products, in fact, I quite like them – saves me money on expensive perfumes. What I love most about this product is the fact that my limp, lifeless hair is given some va va voom when left in its natural state. Don’t expect tons of shine though, you get more of a semi-matte finish, as you can expect with most salt sprays.

Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask starting from £7.65

summer hair 3

Natural oils have put their stamp on the beauty industry as highly sought after, multi-use, miracle workers. Morrocanoil contains an ‘argan oil-infused’ formula along with vitamin F (Omega 6), vitamin A to improve elasticity, vitamin E to protect against free-radicals along with regeneration, and Phenols to shield against environmental stressors.

The Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask is a rich and creamy mask designed to hydrate and repair damaged hair. Shine is restored, hair is left manageable and, when used once or twice a week, hair is rebuilt and reconstructed. After using my favourite hydrating shampoo, I apply a large dollop of this to the mid lengths to ends of my hair and leave to penetrate for 5-10 minutes. Using a shower comb to run through your hair once the mask is applied ensures even application and less hair pulling time when it comes to styling.

I opted for the 75ml version rather the full size as I was looking for a travel friendly hair saviour on my recent travels. This is a welcomed ‘tall drink’ for your hair when the sun dries out every last bit of moisture. The scent is very similar to the iconic Moroccanoil Treatments, but slightly less offensive.

Tangle Teezer Gold Rush Compact Styler £12.25

summer hair 4

Tangle Teezers are small, palm-sized tools; which have paved the way for knot free, pain free hair styling. So innovative these products have become, that even celebrities rave about their abilities (Cara Delevingne can’t live without hers). There’s not much to these brushes, the design is fairly simple, but they have certainly changed my hair game forever.

The Gold Rush Compact Styler is exactly what it says on the tin. Coated in a metallic gold finish, this is a miniature version of the original design; which fits perfectly in any handbag/travel bag. The styler also comes complete with a protective cover to shield it from any impurities and ensure it’s ready to use at any time.

The innovative teeth makes brushing through knots and tangles effortless. Since converting to Tangle Teezers I’ve noticed that my hair is less prone to breaking. I can always tell the health of my hair based on the amount that clogs up in my drain – sorry TMI. However, the sad truth about having a long mane means that hair fall is frequent and plentiful, but with the use of a Tangle Teezer, this has been minimised drastically.

Macadamia Natural Oil Healing Oil Treatment starting from £10.75

summer hair 5

Much like Moroccanoil, this amber hued elixir contains high levels of natural ingredients such as macadamia and argan oil.

Far better described as an intense leave-in conditioner, this oil promotes shine, moisture and split-end rescue for parched hair. The smallest amount is all it takes to turn unmanageable, straw-like hair into glossy tresses. The texture is definitely thicker than other brands on the market and the scent is slightly unbearable, but if it turns my mop into enviable angel hair then sign me up!

I opted for the travel version again as it’s very easy to transport, particularly on holiday. The glass bottle isn’t naturally travel friendly, but it’s light weight and holds a fair amount of product.

Precious Pumpkins

pumpkin diy image 1

Now that October is finally here, it’s time to indulge in the orange stuff. I’m talking about pumpkins of course! From jack-o’-lanterns to pumpkin spiced lattes, as Halloween approaches, pumpkins are in an abundance. The question is, once you have carved out your pumpkin, what do you do with the pulp? Rather than throw it away, try out my fabulous DIY beauty treatments utilising this humble vegetable.

You may not realise it, but pumpkin seed oil exists in many of the beauty products you already own. Why, you may ask? Well pumpkins are packed with vitamin E, zinc, omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids; which naturally boost your skin and hair. The antioxidants in pumpkins help retain moisture, fight free radicals and help you maintain a youthful appearance. The vitamin E component improves skin tone, rapidly heals wounds, fights acne and helps with skin renewal. Pumpkins are also perfect for fighting dry and brittle hair as it protects hair follicles, increases shine and encourages hair growth. It’s safe to say that pumpkins have a greater purpose than just decorating your home during Halloween!

To make pumpkin puree
Cut pumpkin into quarters and peel
Chop into medium sized chunks
Boil under tender
Once cooked and cooled, puree in a blender and refrigerate for up to 3 days

Here are my top three DIY treatments using pureed pumpkins:-

Nourishing Pumpkin And Coconut Hair Mask
What you need:

Coconut oil
Add a few tablespoons of coconut oil to the pureed pumpkin and mix until smooth. Apply the mixture to damp hair and cover with a plastic cap. For deeper penetration, wrap a heated towel over the cap and let it sit for at least 20 minutes. Shampoo and condition as normal to wash out the mixture.

Hair Balm To The Rescue

IMG_1031

If I had to sum up my hair in a few short words it would be dry, frizzy and thick. No matter how many products I run through my hair in the morning, by the afternoon my hair is begging for some moisture. Straightening is the worst. The sleek, polished, poker straight effect I get once I run my GHDS through my hair never lasts all day. On my recent Lush trip I discovered a tiny little beauty that I just had to try.

Lush’s Shine So Bright is a balm, but rather than the lips, it’s for your hair! Titled a ‘split hair treatment’, it doesn’t contain silicone like many other hair treatments, but a long list of wonderful ingredients including coconut oil, shea butter and free range eggs for added protein.

The packaging is oh so cute and very portable; which was the reason why I purchased this product. Its solid consistency is packaged into a compact 0.3 oz tin and is perfect for popping into your bag for those little flyaway emergencies. Simply melt the surface of the balm with your fingers for a few seconds before distributing through your hair.

Although it is a split hair treatment, I absolutely love it for taming frizz and controlling flyaway hairs on the go. As an added bonus, the beautiful scent makes for a lovely hair perfume.

Shine So Bright has very quickly become a handbag staple for me.

You can purchase from Lush Cosmetics’ website here.
