Evening Skincare Routine | Winter 2016

skincare night 8

I thought it only fitting that as my first blog post for 2016 I should dedicate it to my first true love – skincare. Although I am a self-confessed makeup lover, skincare has always been a guilty pleasure of mine. Not just the products themselves, but the routine that they require thrills me. I love nothing more than wiping off the slap and treating my skin to some much needed R & R.

Now that I am approaching the dreaded 3-0 I have learnt, more than ever, the importance of a good skincare routine. After a certain age consistency and quality are two necessary factors in skincare. Investing your time and money into your skin will benefit you in the long run. After all, who doesn’t want to look young and youthful as the years roll by? The products mentioned below may seem excessive and time consuming, but trust me when I say that it makes the world of difference.

My evening and daytime skincare routines are slightly different. I reserve most of my skincare products for the evening as I tend to have more time to dedicate to my skin. A night time skincare routine is important, because your skin naturally regenerates, repairs and restores itself while you sleep. Cell renewal is significantly higher, your skin is more responsive to active ingredients and your body temperature is higher allowing for faster absorption of products. While you drift into dream land your skin is hard at work so treating it beforehand, with high quality products, will ensure you arise to a plump, smooth and glowing face.

My skin type is dry with a slightly oily t-zone. During the winter months, my skin dries out further and craves nourishment. I am not susceptible to break out or any other skin conditions. I use the products below in the order that they are listed. Each of these products have been tried and tested for several months. I have found that these products are perfect for my skin type. If you have a different skin type or particular concerns then you may want to consider products more specifically tailored to your needs.

Pre-cleanse

skincare night 7

I’m sure you have all heard the cardinal rule that you should never sleep with your makeup on, but how many of us actually adhere to it? I know I’ve been guilty of it in the past. Certainly after a night out I’ve gone to bed (greasy kebab in tow) with a full face of makeup on. However, studies have shown that for every night you sleep in your makeup, your skin ages by three days!

Pre-cleansing is essential for removing the initial layer of grime, sweat, oil and makeup that sits on top of your skin. Some may find this step unnecessary as you’re going to go in with your regular cleanser anyway, but pre-cleansing is the gateway for your regular cleanser. By removing the first layer of dirt, you allow for your regular cleanser to delve further into your skin layers providing you with a deeper clean.

Simple Kind To Skin | Cleansing Facial Wipes 25s £3.25

I use these wipes on days that I’m feeling particularly lazy or when I’m wearing little to no makeup at all. It may seem silly to use face wipes on your skin when you have no makeup on, but you’ll be surprised at how much dirt a wipe will pick up from your face.

I love the size of the wipes. One wipe is sufficient for your entire face and removes eye makeup with hardly any force. As a contact lens wearer I love that the wipes don’t irritate my eyes. They’re free from alcohol and harsh chemicals; which make them very comfortable to use. They’re also perfect for travelling.

The Body Shop | Camomile Silky Cleansing Oil £11.00

I absolutely love cleansing oils. I love watching a silky-soft oil dissolve away my makeup with ease. I use cleansing oils on days where I’ve worn heavy makeup and a facial wipe will not suffice. Removing stubborn makeup such as waterproof mascara, liquid lipstick or glitter eye shadow is effortless with cleansing oils.

Being somewhat of a cult item in the beauty world, The Body Shop’s Camomile Silky Cleansing Oil is by far my favourite. I’ve tried a lot of cleansing oils in the past, but the formula of this one is super soft and feels incredible against the skin. It’s also very safe to use on your eyes without irritation; which is perfect for a contact lens wearer like me. Makeup literally ‘melts’ off your face with this oil and once mixed with water, the oil turns into a milky cream-like emulsion.

Cleanse

skincare night 1

If there’s one bit of skincare advice that I could give my younger self it would be that facial wipes and cleansing oils alone are not sufficient for beautiful skin. For years I believed that facial wipes were the only step I needed in taking off my makeup. It wasn’t until I discovered top quality facial cleansers and facial brushes that I realised how deep into your skin makeup and grime can go.

Philosophy | Purity Made Simple One-Step Facial Cleanser £18.00-£29.50

Named as one of Sephora’s top beauty products of all time, Philosophy’s Purity Cleanser has definitely earned its stripes. The texture is soft and creamy; which is perfect for the colder months when my skin needs a pamper. It’s super gentle and therefore suitable for most skin types including sensitive skin.

As can be expected with a Philosophy product the smell is lovely and clean with infusions of sage, chamomile, and carrot. The pH balancing formula dissolves dirt and grime and gives you a deep cleanse without being too harsh on your skin.

Philosophy have marketed this cleanser as an ‘all-in-one’ product, meaning it completely eliminates the need for eye makeup removers, cleansing oils or toners. Whilst the idea of an all-in-one product is great, a pre-cleanse is necessary to remove your makeup along with a facial brush to give your skin the best cleanse its ever had.

Magnitone | BareFaced! Vibra-Sonic™ Daily Cleansing Brush £70.00

If you haven’t got into facial brushes yet, what are you waiting for? Facial brushes have completely changed my skincare game. What can only be described as a workout for your face, it’s become somewhat of an obsession for me. It can be hard choosing the right facial brush as there are so many available on the market. However, when I had the opportunity to test out Magnitone’s double award winning Barefaced Daily Cleansing Brush I fell in love. The rotating brush massages your skin while gently exfoliating dead skin cells. I use a small amount of facial cleanser directly on the brush to deeply clean my skin and extract any grime and makeup left behind.

I love the fact that this brush is 100% waterproof. That means I can use it in the shower without making a mess. The brush also comes with a protective travel case for days that I’m away from home and a USB charger.

Whilst some facial brushes can be harsh and abrasive, the Barefaced Daily Cleansing Brush is gentle enough for daily use without causing any damage. All you need is 60 seconds for your entire face; which makes it a super easy, yet effective, addition to your skincare routine. Once the brush makes contact with your skin, the brush will beep every 20 seconds to let you know to move onto a new area of the face.

Exfolitate

skincare night 2

Exfoliation during the winter months is very important. Harsh weather conditions and low humidity levels in the air means that your skin is deprived of moisture. Skin cells become dehydrated leaving a dry, flaky and lacklustre appearance. Central heating can also contribute to irritable skin.

In order to maintain a healthy, glowing appearance, regular exfoliation is necessary. A gentle, yet effective exfoliant will remove dead skin cells from the surface and speed up cell renewal. As we age, our cellular turnover slows down significantly. Excessive dead skin cells sit on the surface of the skin; which not only clogs your pores, but it also exaggerates wrinkles.

Peter Thomas Roth | Firm X Peeling Gel £32.25

The fact that it’s labelled as a ‘peeling gel’ makes it sound slightly scary. Remember that episode of SATC when Samantha had that unfortunate face peel?! Awkward. However, this isn’t the harsh, abrasive peel you would initially think of.

Utilising multi-action enzymes including pineapple, pomegranate and keratinise, dead cells are gently removed from the surface of your skin. Hyaluronic acid is also used to plump and hydrate the skin, giving it a youthful glow.

Although I love traditional exfoliators and their scrubby bits, this exfoliant offers something completely different. Rather than exfoliating beads to slough off dry skin, this is a smooth gel which ‘eats’ the dead skin cells off of your face. As you rub the gel over your face, you can see residue literally falling off. Perhaps a little gross, but I love it! It’s hugely satisfying to see a product work right in front of your eyes. I use this peel twice a week to ensure my skin stay smooth and bright throughout winter.

Face Mask

skincare night 3

With all that cleansing, you would think that there’s nothing left to clean right? Wrong! Whilst cleansing will remove dirt and grime, face masks actually draw out the impurities deep beneath the top layers of the epidermis. Face masks help with exfoliation, toning, hydration and protection. They also improve blood circulation and leaves your skin feeling smoother and softer. So many people believe face masks to be nothing but a placebo for the skin. Whilst they are utterly relaxing, slapping on a face mask once a week ensures that your skin is in tip top condition. For those who don’t find time for a face mask – if you have 10 minutes to spare, you have time for a face mask. In fact, I put my face mask on while I’m doing the housework or whilst watching tv. It’s called multi-masking! Sorry bad joke…I did mention that I’m getting old.

GLAMGLOW | YOUTHMUD Tinglexfoliate Treatment £49.50

I’ll be honest, I’m not faithful with my face masks. I sway between different brands all the time. However, GlAMGLOW is one of those brands that I keep on coming back to. My favourite pre-event grooming technique is slapping on a GLAMGLOW mask. This mud mask guarantees brighter, more radiant skin in just 10 minutes. Perfect for those who lack the time or the patience. The ingredients list includes french sea clay (fancy), pumice, green tea leaf, chamomile and lavender. I spread a thin layer of this mask with a foundation brush to ensure that it’s spread evenly. Within 10 minutes the mask beings to dry leaving patches of moisture; which is actually the oil and grime being extracted from your skin.

Tone

skincare night 6

Many people don’t know what toners do and therefore skip this step. I’ll be honest, I used to be one of those people. After constantly hearing skincare experts drone on about cleanse, tone and moisturise; I felt as though I was missing a piece of the puzzle in my skincare routine.

Toners have many purposes for your face. They contain vitamins and antioxidants to help refresh the skin, providing a boost of energy and calm. They can help fight free radicals and rejuvenate the skin by providing a protective barrier that will help your skin retain moisture and maintain the capillary walls. Certain toners contain alpha hydroxy or glycolic acids to gentle exfoliate the skin and tighten pores.

Pixi | Glow Tonic £18.00

Being in the beauty world, I constantly hear the words ‘cult product’ all the time. However, being the skeptic that I am, I always feel that I need to try out the products themselves before I join the fan base. The Glow Tonic from Pixi is one of those products; which sits on the shelves of pretty much every beauty blogger that I know. It’s a gentle exfoliating toner; which gentle dissolves dull skin cells. It also contains aloe to sooth your skin and create a luminous layer on your skin.

As you can tell from the title, this toner provide me with a glow after cleansing and reduces any redness caused by the exfoliating peel and face mask used previously. I lightly soak a cotton wool pad with this toner and rub all over my face.

Facial Oil

skincare night 5

About 5 years ago I made the switch from night creams to facial oils. Not that I have anything against night creams, I have just fallen head over heels in love with the feel of a luxurious facial oil on my skin.

Facial oils have long been a secret of beauty insiders. Not only do they offer intense hydration, but they contain high levels of anti-ageing properties; which trump over any regular moisturisers. Facial oils are also excellent at eliminating many skin conditions such as pigmentation, scaring or psoriasis.

From the age of 25, wrinkles appear due to the skin’s natural oil decrease. The moisture barrier breaks down and the skin dries out. Most night creams contain a small percentage of oil, but not enough to make up for the loss in moisture. Oils are lipophilic (fat loving) and they pass through the lipid layer of the skin faster than any regular moisturiser. Skin appears plumper, smoother, brighter and all round amazing. Facial oils are the best way to moisturise your skin after your cleansing routine as it soothes irritated skin and adds a level of hydration that will last well into the next morning.

Caudalie | Polyphenol C15 Overnight Detox Oil £29.00

The ultimate indulgence for a night time skincare routine, it’s my secret weapon for flawless skin. This facial oil is excellent at repairing daily damage. Two drops is enough for the entire face and provides unbelievable moisture. It provides rehabilitation for stressed out skin. It contains antioxidant grape polyphenols to encourage cell regeneration and repair. A ‘detox’ for the skin, this plant-derived elixir helps to fortify its natural defenses, enhancing the free radical-fighting cell pool, to leave your skin better equipped to protect itself against the elements. Neroli works to purify and decongest. Rosehip oil encourages repair, healing scar tissue and strengthening elastin fibres. Lavendar and carrot oil soothes irritation, softens, hydrates and detoxifies.

Eye Cream

skincare night 4

The skin around the eyes are fragile and more pore to dryness than the rest of the face. Your eyes are the quickest part of your skin to show age and fatigue with constant movement and squinting. Fluids collect under the eyes and cause puffiness and dark circles. Eye creams soothe the skin with intense moisturisation. A good quality eye cream will smooth out fine line and winkles by stimulating collagen production and promoting cellular regeneration.

As the skin around your eyes are a lot thiner than the rest of your face, it is advised to only use an eye cream in that area and not your regular moisturiser.

Kiehls | Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado £20.00

During the winter months, the area around my eyes get very dry and irritated. Being a contact lens wearer, extreme weather conditions make me eyes stream constantly, causing puffiness around my eyes.

My first impression of this cream was that the creamy consistency was perfect to soothe my dry eyes. The natural ingredients list (avocado oil and vitamin A) meant that it would not sting or irritate my eyes when I wear contact lenses. This eye cream doesn’t promise the world. It doesn’t claim to cure dark circles or deep rooted wrinkles, however, what it does offer is intense hydration; which can actually slow down the process of ageing and discolouration. Upon application the cream turns into an almost gel/water like texture.

Banish The Chocolate: Best Of 2015 Beauty Advent Calendars

beautyadventcalendars

Let me just throw this out there; I’m a HUGE Christmas geek! While many will drone on about Christmas being thrown in our faces literally the day after Halloween, I bask in the glory of festivity.

So now that we are officially less than a month away from (in my opinion) the best day of the year, I must warn you now that this blog will be like Christmas on crack. Every week a new blog post will be up to mark my favourite time of the year. Over-kill? Possibly. Bothered? Not really! So with that said, crimbo-phobic people please revert your eyes, because we’re about to get seriously festive!

This year I have decided against a chocolate advent calendar. Mostly because I could do without the extra calories, but also because I’ve found something even better to wet my appetite with. It’s no surprise at all that I’m a beauty product lover. When I came across my first beauty calendar, I knew that this year Thorntons will have to take a back seat, because it’s all about the beauty advent calendar!

With the same concept as traditional advent calendars, behind each door is a little treat for you to enjoy. Certainly more long lasting than a tiny bit of chocolate! Some calendars even offer full sized products; which really make up the value. Whether you’re a beauty enthusiast like myself or you’re looking to treat someone special, beauty advent calendars are a perfect way to discover brands and products you wouldn’t normally try out.

2015 seems to be a popular year with an endless list of brands now offering their take on the beauty advent calendar. From Benefit to Body Shop, you’re guaranteed to find the perfect calendar to help you countdown to Christmas.

Here’s my list of the best Beauty Calendars of 2015 :-

Selfridges (£95.00) available here

This one is for the true beauty fan who dreams of the sights and smells of Selfridges’ famous beauty halls. Containing a mixture of 24 skincare and makeup products, the brands include Kiehl’s, Lancome, YSL and many more. Not the cheapest of options, but the price is justifiable considering how many luxury brands are included.

Ciate Mini Mani Month (£49.00) available here

This is perfect for any nail lovers out there who want to keep their talons in top shape for the party season. The adorable packaging contains mini paint pots, treatments, glitter toppers and a nail file. Incredible value considering how many products you actually get.

The Body Shop 24 Happy Days (£60) available here

One of the very first beauty calendars released; this calendar is the most Christmas-sy by far. Body Shop devotees will love the array of mini soaps, body creams and sparkling fragrances in their iconic scents. Let’s be honest, you can never go wrong with a bit of Body Shop!

You Beauty (£59.95) available here

The contents are worth a staggering £330.00, so in terms of value, you definitely get your money’s worth here. If you love discovering new products then this calendar is perfect for you.

Benefit Party Poppers (£34.50) available here

This hugely popular advent calendar has already sold out in the UK, but if you’re able to source one from the States then you can certainly get your hands on it. Worth £70.00, this calendar is loud and proud (typical of Benefit). Although you only get 12 products; which is somewhat of a disappointment, Benefit fans will certainly go crazy for this amazing calendar.

Clarins (£60) available here

A new contender for 2015. The simple, yet elegant design mimics the concept of Clarins products. Iconic makeup, skincare, and pampering treats are all included and offer incredible value. This is perfect for the mature lady in your life.

Kerastase (£79.99) available here

Considering the price of Kerastaste products, the 24 deluxe sample you get within this calendar offers incredibly value. If you haven’t tried Kerastaste before, this is perfect to try out their iconic products. If you’re looking to get serious enviable hair, Kerastaste is the brand for you.

Charlotte Tilbury Book of Makeup Magic (£150) available here

This calendar is absolute perfection. Granted it’s not the cheapest, but you get a few full sized products along with travel sized ones; which justifies the price (in my eyes). Although you only get 12 boxes, much like the Benefit calendar, you get a good mix of Charlotte Tilbury’s most iconic beauty secrets.

Lush 12 Days of Christmas (£49.95) available here

Lush-a-holics look no further! If you’ve been eyeing up Lush’s Christmas range, much like myself, and have been debating on which product to try out then this calendar is a life saver. 12 of their most popular Christmas themed bombs, bars and lotions, this calendar will have you smelling a treat.

Jo Malone (£260) available here

Exclusive to Harrods, the Jo Malone advent calendar is the ultimate in luxury. Offering 12 drawers in a beautifully packaged box, you can find classic scents from Jo Malone including Lime Basil & Mandarin and my favourite Dark Amber & Ginger Lilly. The price is just as indulgent as the packaging, but if you’re a fan of Jo Malone’s scents you’ll know that these miniature perfumes will last you well up until next Christmas.

Makeup Revolution (Previously £50, now £20) available here

This is by far the most affordable beauty advent calendar available. Featuring 25 full sized products, this calendar is for the makeup enthusiast looking to feed their addiction throughout the Christmas period.

Boots NO 7 25 Days Of Beauty Wonder (£38.00) available here

The contents alone are worth a whopping £148.00! Much like the Clarins calendar, this is perfect for the slightly more mature lady in your life. I’ve got my eyes on this for my Mum as she loves NO 7 products. Bursting with skincare, makeup and body care products, this calendar will last you well up until next Christmas.

Have you managed to get your hands on any of these calendars? Let me know your thoughts on them!

Painless Depilation

melody claire 6

Back in October I had the pleasure of attending the Olympia Beauty Show in London. Being surrounded by amazing brands and like minded beauty enthusiasts was an incredibly fun experience.

Granted that this is a slightly obvious statement to make considering that I’m a beauty blogger, but I love experimenting in new and unknown products. You can almost guarantee that if it’s beauty related, I’ve tried it!

During the course of the show, I found myself being dragged into several stalls by overzealous sales representatives. Not that I expected any different, but seriously, how many times can one hear the words ‘wonder product’ in a day?!

One stall, in particular, stood out to me straight away. Not particularly for the aesthetics or the perfect product placement, but for the two simple words written across a huge banner stand – HAIR REMOVAL.

Now when it comes to hair removal, I’ve tried every method available. I must admit, and I’m sure I’ll get a few eye rolls after reading this, but I’m not particularly hairy. Being of Indian descent you would think otherwise, but in all honesty, I simply don’t have that problem (God has not been so kind to me in other departments). With that said, I still look to hair removal methods to rid myself of the hair that I do have.

I’m not much of an advocate of shaving as I find it irritates my dry skin. I’ve attempted creams, sugaring, laser hair removal and waxing for longer lasting results, but besides the pain factor, I find these methods very time consuming.

melody claire 1

Melody Claire is a company which promotes the Elegant Depilation System. Depilation (aka Epilation) has always been thought of as a painful and slow process of hair removal; which removes hair directly from the root promising longer lasting results. Now call me crazy, but I’m not up for dying a slow and painful death whilst trying to remove my bikini line!

The Elegant Depilation System works slightly different to traditional systems. Rather than using a plucking method to rip the hair from the roots, small micro-crystal pads are used to gently buff them away. The system promises long lasting results much like waxing, but is completely mess-free and travel friendly.

melody claire 2

How to use it

Each kit contains:

1 Large Backing Pad
1 Small Backing Pad
4 Large Micro-Crystal replacement pads
4 Small Micro-Crystal replacement pads
1 Travel Case

The micro-crystal pads are used to stick onto the pink rubber applicators. Using small circular motions, rub the pad onto the skin in clockwise then anti-clockwise movements. This motion painlessly removes hair follicles leaving you with smooth and silky skin. The removed hairs simply dissolve away once removed and avoids any messy clean ups.

The larger pads are used for the body and the smaller pads are used for the face and harder to reach areas i.e. fingers and toes.

melody claire 3

Does it work?

The system certainly lives up to its claims of painless hair removal. Before purchasing, the lady at the Melody Claire stand tested the micro-crystal pad on my very reluctant husband. She demonstrated how easily the pad removed the long hairs on his arm revealing incredibly smooth and soft skin. After confirming her claims of pain-free removal with my husband, I quickly asked her to put one in a bag for me.

So here is my biggest gripe with this system. Despite its claims that results are similar to that of waxing, I would strongly disagree. It’s hard to see how hair is being pulled from the roots without feeling the slightest pinch. This could be down to the fact that the hair is, in fact, not being pulled from the roots, but rather cut at the surface of the skin much like shaving. Low and behold, within a week my hair grew back.

I must admit that when using the pad, you literally don’t feel a thing. However, there’s a strong possibility of going overboard. If you rub a little too hard in one area, the aftermath is painful; much like taking sandpaper to your skin! This is not so likely if you are using it in larger areas such as legs. However, I would be extra vigilant in sensitive areas like your face, underarms and bikini.

Unlike waxing, hair does not need to reach a certain length for this to work. The micro-crystal pads are very effective at getting rid of the shortest of hairs.

Verdict?

If you like shaving or are looking for a quick fix, then this is perfect. Even if you are doing laser hair removal and you’ve been advised to shave or use hair removal cream in between each treatment, this could be a great alternative. I would certainly not use this system hoping to get the same results as waxing or traditional depilation methods.

The travel-friendly aspect is quite appealing. I always find that when I’m on holiday, despite getting my legs waxed beforehand, I get a small amount of stubble peeping through. This system is perfect for popping into your holdall to ‘top up’ your legs when needed. It’s also quite handy in emergency situations where you simply have no time or the facilities to shave or wax.

Overall, the claims made by Melody Claire were unfortunately too good to be true in my case. The ease of use and painless aspects were fantastic, but it simply does not give you long-lasting results. If used correctly, it can give you beautifully soft skin. Along with hair, it also takes the very top layer of your skin leaving it smooth and supple.

I would continue to use this product as a backup hair removal method for times when shaving, waxing or any other hair removal method is not an option.

melody claire 4

How much does it cost and where can I get it from?

You can purchase the Elegant Depilation System and additional replacement pads from the Melody Claire website here. They are currently offering the entire system for a bargin price of £19.99.

Have you tried the Elegant Depilation System before? What’s your verdict or favourite hair removal method? Comment below!

The Palette That Broke The Internet

carli bybel palette 5

I have a confession to make. When it comes to limited edition products, I lose all sense of reason. Where many people will happily let a limited edition or flash sale go, I am the person who queues for several hours to get my hands on something that I, quite frankly, might not even need!

When I first heard about the Carli Bybel/BH Cosmetics collaboration, I knew that this is something that I most definitely need. Although I have a never ending supply of makeup palettes, this one practically lured me in leaving me helpless to resist.

Not that I’m a huge BH Cosmetics fan. Being an American brand, it’s fairly unheard of in the UK. I am, however, a big fan of Carli Bybel. For those of who you haven’t heard of her, she is an immensely popular beauty/fashion vlogger on YouTube, who has turned her expertise into an internet phenomenon.

carli bybel palette 2

On 8th September 2015, I woke up to my 7:45am alarm, giving myself enough time to prepare a coffee and switch on my laptop for the 8am (GMT) release. I bid farewell to my husband, shoved a bunch of takeaway menus in his hand and sentenced myself to solitude in hope of not being disturbed. If it took all day, so be it. This was in the name of makeup! It appears as though I was not the only makeup enthusiast on a mission that day, as the BH Cosmetics website was complete standstill within minutes. After spending 7 painful hours continuously refreshing my screen, my order finally went through and I received my confirmation email before it completely sold out.

carli bybel palette 4

Priced at only $12.50 (approx. £8.22) per palette, this is definitely one of my most thrifty makeup purchases. Although delivery to the UK takes between 8-11 days and costs around £5.97, BH Cosmetics is so affordable that you could throw in a few more items in your basket to justify the delivery.

The palette contains 5 matte and 5 shimmer eye shadows, along with 4 highlighters. I was pleasantly surprised at the formula of these powders, with each one as creamy and pigmented as the last. Considering the affordability, the quality is comparable to any high end palette.

The colours range from a pale pink to a deep plum, but all contribute to a warm, earthy toned palette; which perfectly defines Carli’s signiture style. The versatility of colours allow you to create an endless list of looks; all of which are very ‘on trend’ for this Autumn.

carli bybel palette 1

The eye shadows blend amazingly, with very little fall out. The matte shades offer the ability to create a subtle, yet neutral glamour with the shimmery shades offering drama and excitement. Although it doesn’t appear as a vast amount of product, the shadows are so pigmented that a little goes a very long way. My only gripe is that the shadows are unnamed; which is a problem for beauty bloggers and vloggers referring to this palette in makeup tutorials.

carli bybel palette 3

The highlighters are my favourite part of the palette (of course). The colour selection offer options for many skin tones. The coppery shade, furthest to the right, has to be the most beautiful golden hue I have seen in a drug store product! The pigmentation in these highlighters is immense and a slight swipe of a fan brush is enough to provide you with a beautiful glow atop cheekbones. If for some reason you don’t find your perfect highlighter shade, they work beautifully as eye shadows.

As far as my first experience goes with BH Cosmetics, I’m pleasantly surprised. Carli did a great job in creating an affordable, yet high quality product. The packaging is classy and easily spotted in my makeup collection and the colours will certainly be at the top of my list for Autumn.

The Carli Bybel Palette is currently sold out, but due for restock at the beginning of October. Enter in your email address here and be the first to be notified when the palette becomes available.

Change Your Beauty Game With These 20 Hacks

Beauty hacks are the way forward. Despite having an array of beauty products at our disposal, us women sometimes find ourselves in a pinch. If getting glammed up isn’t as much fun as it should be and you’re not utilising smart hacks into your beauty routine then you’re working too hard!

Here are my top 20 beauty hacks that will literally save you time, effort and money.

beauty hacks

1. Perfect your cat eye – Let’s face it. Unless you have the steady hands of a surgeon, perfecting your winged eyeliner can be tricky! Luckily this hack will change your eyeliner game forever. Place a piece of scotch or masking tape on the outer corner of your eye to guide you into the perfect flick. You can also use tape to create a sharp line when doing dramatic eye looks to prevent yourself from bringing the shadows out too far.

2. Fool proof lash application – I know plenty of ladies out there who struggle with putting on their falsies. I have to admit, being an Essex girl at heart, I have somewhat mastered my false lash technique. However, for those women out there who struggle with fiddly strip lashes then this hack is for you. Take your strip lash and cut along the band into three parts. Don’t panic! Simply apply lash glue to the band of each section and apply to your lids in order of length (longest section to be placed on the outer corner of the eye). Once applied no one would notice the difference…and you will still have your sanity!

3. Boost your scent – Christian Dior once said “A woman’s perfume tells more about herself than her handwriting”. Your scent speaks a thousand words, but how do you ensure that your favourite perfume lasts all day? Rub some Vaseline onto your pulse points before spraying perfume directly on top. The Vaseline acts as a ‘glue’ for the perfume to stick onto all day long! Don’t forget your pulse points are inside your wrists, inside your elbows, behind your ears, behind your knees and base of your throat.

4. No more lipstick on your teeth – This is the ultimate glamour girl beauty hack. Avoid those awful lipstick stains on your teeth by placing your index finger inside your mouth while you purse your lips in the form of an ‘O’ shape. Slowly drag your finger out whilst keeping your lips together. This will wipe off any excess lipstick you may have on the inner part of your lips and avoid those awful lipstick smears.

5. Split ends be gone – Having had long hair my entire life, split ends have always been a struggle. Avoid the hair dressers by trimming them yourself. Take 1″ sections of your hair and twist into spirals. The small hairs that stick out of the spiral are considered ‘unhealthy hair’. Run your scissors along the spiral to trim off the small hairs. This works particularly well with hairstyles that have layers as it allows you to retain your length.

6. Makeup for your body – If you have any scarring or imperfections on your body that you want to cover up simply use some BB cream. The consistency will feel just like a moisturiser, but will give you enough coverage to cover up those skin sins.

7. Revive your mascara – If your holy grail mascara has dried or clumped up don’t fret! Simply fill half a mug with hot water and dip the tube of mascara in it for a few minutes (make sure it’s closed!). The heat from the water will soften the dried solution and give your mascara a new lease of life.

8. Intensify your eye shadow – Apply a white jumbo pencil all over your lids before applying your chosen eye shadow. This will brighten any hue and make it pop. Alternatively, if you are going for a dark, smokey eye apply a black pencil or gel liner all over your lids to intensify the colour.

9. Waterline longevity – If you struggle with getting your waterline liner/kohl to last all day and night then try out this hack. Once you have applied your desired eye pencil in your waterline, ‘set’ it with a matching eye shadow. Using a stiff liner brush, press the shadow on top of the eyeliner. This will ensure that your eyes stay lined and intense all day and night. Running your eye pencil through a gel eyeliner before applying to your waterline also works wonders.

10. Red lipstick to tackle dark circles – Being of Indian descent I understand the struggle that some women get with under eye circles. I’ve tried every serum, gel and mask there is on the market and although some are great in reducing dark circles, I have yet to find one that completely alleviates the problem. Next time you’re in need of covering up last night’s antics try this genius trick. Swipe some orange-toned red lipstick under your eyes in a semi circle shape. Blend out the lipstick with a brush or Beautyblender before applying your favourite highlighting concealer. The orange-red tones neutralize the blue and purple tones in your dark circles making your concealer application much more effective.

11. Bouncy curls in minutes – If you love the look of bouncy, glamorous curls, but lack the time or patience to create them then try this out. Put your hair in a high pony and split into 3-5 sections (depending on thickness of your hair). Curl each section with a tong, remove the elastic band holding the pony and shake your hair out. You will be left with sexy curls that look like they’ve taken hours to create.

12. Alternative makeup brushes – Let’s face it, makeup brushes can be expensive. MAC brushes retail from around £15 each; which is a huge investment when you consider how many brushes are needed for a perfectly blended look. If you’re on a budget why not try purchasing your ‘makeup brushes’ from an art supply store? You will find an array of natural and synthetic haired brushes; which look identical to those you would find at any makeup counter. It’s important, however, to carefully examine the brushes and ensure that they are of good quality and soft enough to work on your delicate skin.

13. Supermodel pins – Contouring has taken over the beauty world. We’ve all heard of contouring your face to fake perfect bone structure, but have you heard of contouring your legs? Victoria Secret models may have amazing bodies, but they all take to this little trick before the runway to enhance their natural leg definition. Apply a self tanner or bronzing product all over your legs. This hides a multitude of sins including, dare I say it?, cellulite! Next, apply a highlighter or shimmer stick down the centre of your leg starting from your thigh down to your foot. This immediately draws the eye to the centre part of your legs making them appear longer and leaner.

14. Brush away those clumpy lashes – An old toothbrush can save the day if you’ve been a little heavy handed with your mascara. Run your toothbrush along your lashes immediately after applying mascara to remove any excess product and prevent your lashes from looking like spider legs.

15. Lighten your foundation colour – Picking the right foundation colour is essential in creating your makeup look. Choosing the wrong colour can have dire effects on the rest of your makeup. If you’ve found the perfect foundation, but it’s in a few shades darker than your skin, simply add a few drops of moituriser to the mix to customise the colour. The moituriser lightens the foundation making it more suitable for your skin tone. This also works well for women who buy two different shades of foundations as the seasons change.

16. Add volume to your hair with eyeshadow – If you find that your hair parting or hairline isn’t as full as you would like it, using eyeshadow could be the answer to your problems. Use a shadow the same colour as your natural hair and apply with a makeup brush to the area of concern. It’s not permanent, but it’s a perfect quick fix for a night out or for that spontaneous selfie!

17. Dry your sweaty feet – TMI I know, but we’ve all been there. During the warmer months, ballet flats and sandals can cause your feet to sweat. If you want to avoid slipping and sliding in your shoes then try this genius hack. Simply spray your feet with dry shampoo to absorb sweat and keep bacteria at bay. Your feet will thank you for it!

18. Travel-sized DIY – We all like to have our lotions and potions with us when travelling. However, carrying a truck load of beauty products while adhering to baggage weight restrictions is not feasible. Next time you’re packing for your holiday try downsizing your favourite beauty products by transferring them to empty, plastic cosmetic containers. Not only will you save space in your toiletry bag, but you leave room in your suitcase for more shoes!

19. Bobby pin etiquette – If you find that your bobby pins are not holding your hairstyle as well as you would like, try spraying them with hairspray beforehand. This will add extra hold and ensure that your bobby pins stay in place all day.

20. Prevent messy manicures – If you’re doing an at-home manicure and find it hard to keep nail varnish off the skin around your nails, Vaseline may be your saviour! Rub some Vaseline into the cuticle area to prevent nail polish from ruining your manicure.
